Team News
Striker Daniel Sturridge has not made Liverpool's Champions League trip to Basle after failing to recover from a thigh strain in time.
The England international has missed five matches with the problem and while he is edging closer a return he will not be risked for the Reds' second match in Group B and he was not on the team flight which left Liverpool at lunchtime.
It is understood that Mamadou Sakho has also not travelled to Switzerland.
Lazar Markovic is available for Liverpool after serving a ban on matchday one. Markovic received a two-match ban for his red card in Benfica's Europa League semi-final second leg draw at Juventus. Emre Can is also available after a ban but is ruled out through injury, as is Joe Allen.
Meanwhile, Marcelo Díaz is serving the second of a three-match ban following his dismissal in Basle's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Valencia last season.
Match Notes
Liverpool scraped through their opening game against the Bulgarians of Ludogorets.
Now they face a tougher match even though Basel lost their opener 5-1 against group favourites Real Madrid.
Having kept just one clean sheet all season so far, Brendan Rodgers will concentrate on staying strong at the back and hoping his side can take a leaf out of Real's books.
Stat of the game: Basle's overall home record against English teams is good, with four wins and three draws from a total of 11 games.
