Preview: United vs Real Madrid

State of play: As Group A leaders, United will qualify for Monday's International Champions Cup final in Miami with any but a defeat in normal time. Meanwhile, Real Madrid's loss to Roma on Tuesday means they are already out of the competition.

The opposition Los Blancos are one of the world’s most powerful footballing institutions and, with a record 10 European Cups, there are seldom other clubs who can compete with Madrid’s global prowess. Founded in 1902, their origin goes back to the introduction of football to Madrid by a group of academics known as Institución libre de enseñanza. Within three years of the club’s establishment, Real scooped their first title (the Campeonato Centro) and set a precedent for what was to become an illustrious history.

Previous meetings United’s most recent battle with Real captured the world’s attention during the 2012/13 season, when Cristiano Ronaldo inspired his side to a 3-2 aggregate win that knocked the Reds out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage. Prior to that tie, Sir Alex Ferguson's men were beaten by another Ronaldo, of the Brazilian kind, whose Old Trafford hat-trick helped secure an infamous victory in the 2003 Champions League quarter-finals. Perhaps the most iconic meeting between the sides came en-route to United winning their first European Cup in 1968 when the Matt Busby's heroes earned a 4-3 aggregate success in the semi-finals.

Head coach When appointed boss in the summer of 2013, Carlo Ancelotti's job description was simple: secure the club’s 10th Champions League crown. Of course, the Italian has already met his target, having won the European Cup via an extra-time victory over neighbours Atletico Madrid in May.

Did you know? In the immediate aftermath of the Munich air disaster, Real offered to loan star player Alfredo Di Stefano to United to help compensate for the club’s tragically depleted squad.

Quote/unquote: "I’m really looking forward to it. Considering it’s a pre-season tour, the teams we are playing against are unbelievable. Roma and Inter are both big teams but I think the one everyone will be looking forward to is Real Madrid. You see the stars they’ve got and it will be great to put yourself up against them and see how you deal with it." - Luke Shaw

Star man Do you need to ask? Cristiano Ronaldo is officially the world's best player, having scooped his second Ballon d’Or award ahead of Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery. However, the Portuguese legend is not the only dangerman in Real' squad with the likes of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez all lining up in attack for the Spanish giants.
